Major Boost to Housing Grants for Older People and People with Disabilities in Ireland
In 2024 there was welcomed news for those requiring housing adaptations as Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage Darragh O’Brien, along with Minister of State for Local Government and Planning Alan Dillon, announced significant increases to housing grants for older people and those living with disabilities.
Effective from December 1st 2024, substantial changes have been introduced to the Housing Adaptation Grant for People with a Disability, making it more accessible and impactful for those who need it most.
Key Changes at a Glance
✅ Increased Maximum Grant Amounts:
Housing Adaptation Grant for People with a Disability:
Increased to €40,000 (up from €30,000)Mobility Aids Grant:
Increased to €8,000 (up from €6,000)Housing Aid for Older People Grant:
Increased to €10,700 (up from €8,000)
These changes better reflect the real costs of essential works, including home extensions, accessible bathrooms, stairlifts, ramps, and other modifications.
✅ Expanded Income Thresholds:
The income eligibility thresholds have been increased by 25%, meaning that more individuals and families may now qualify for support. Additionally, changes to how income is assessed (including new deductions and exemptions) ensure the process is fairer and more inclusive.
Why These Changes Matter?
The 2025 updates mark a meaningful shift in how Ireland supports its ageing population and those with disabilities. With higher funding, fairer assessments, and streamlined delivery, the grants now better match rising construction costs and the increasing demand for accessible housing solutions.
These reforms also underline a broader national commitment to supporting independent living, reducing hospital admissions, and enabling people to remain safely in their homes for longer.
