Occupational Therapy Home Assessments for Housing Adaptation Grants

A home assessment looks at how you currently manage within your home and considers your current and future needs. We identify the adaptations that may be required to help make your home more suitable, accessible and safe, with the aim of maximising your independence, safety and quality of life both now and into the future.
Depending on your individual circumstances, recommendations may include adaptations such as:
Accessible showers or bathroom adaptations
Ramps and improved access to the home
Stairlifts or through-floor lifts
Grab rails and other safety adaptations
Bedroom or bathroom adaptations, including extensions where appropriate
We provide a detailed OT assessment and report in a timely manner, outlining your functional needs and the adaptations that are considered necessary to support your independence and safety. The OT report can then be submitted with your Housing Adaptation Grant application.
Up to €300 towards your OT assessment
The cost of a privately arranged Occupational Therapy assessment can be reimbursed by the local authority up to €300, as part of an approved Housing Adaptation Grant. We will provide you with a receipt for your OT assessment to include with your grant application.
Housing Adaptation Grant – up to €40,000
The Housing Adaptation Grant for People with a Disability is means-tested and is administered by your local authority. Under the current scheme, the maximum grant available is €40,000, although the amount awarded depends on household income and the approved cost of the works. Applicants with lower household incomes may be eligible for a higher percentage of the approved works, while the level of grant tapers as household income increases.
The grant may assist with necessary works to make a home more suitable for a person with a physical, sensory, intellectual or mental health disability. The local authority makes the final decision regarding eligibility, the grant amount and the works approved.
